They can also be used as reducers for lower to medium speed applications. Also, since their reduction ratio is based on the number of enamel on the equipment, they are a lot more compact than other types of gears. Like good pitch leadscrews, worm gears are generally self-locking, generating them best for hoisting and hoisting applications.
